The Quiet Light (“we”, “us”) respects your privacy. This policy explains what information is involved when you use https://thequietlight.org and the choices you have.
The short version
- We do not ask you to create an account, and we do not ask for your name, email or other personal details to use the site.
- What you type in the reflection space never leaves your device. It is processed entirely in your web browser and is never sent to us or anyone else.
- Your comfort settings and saved keepsakes are stored only in your own browser.
- Some pages show advertisements from Google AdSense. Google and its partners may use cookies to show and measure ads, as described below.
Information stored on your device
To remember your preferences, The Quiet Light uses your browser's local storage to save:
- whether you chose “Evening light” or “Daylight”
- any quotes you choose to “Keep”
This information stays on your device. We cannot see it. You can remove it at any time by removing keepsakes on the home page, or by clearing your browser's site data.
The reflection space
When you type how you feel and press “Find words of comfort”, the matching happens entirely inside your browser using a list of quotes downloaded with the page. Your words are not saved, not transmitted, and not seen by us, Google, or anyone else. When you press “Release these words”, the text is simply cleared from the screen.
Advertising and cookies
We use Google AdSense to show advertisements on some pages. Google is a third-party vendor, and it uses cookies to serve ads on our site.
- Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the internet.
- You may opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings. You can also opt out of some third-party vendors' use of cookies for personalised advertising at www.aboutads.info.
- To learn more about how Google uses information from sites that use its services, see How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services.
If you are visiting from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, you will be asked for your consent before personalised advertising cookies are used, through a consent message provided by Google. You can change your choices at any time using the privacy settings link shown with that message.
Server logs
Like almost every website, our hosting provider may automatically record basic technical information when pages are requested — such as IP address, browser type and the page visited — for security and to keep the site running. We do not use this information to identify individual visitors.
Links to other websites
Our pages may link to other websites, such as support organisations. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those sites.
Children
The Quiet Light is intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights under laws such as the GDPR or the California Consumer Privacy Act, including the right to access or delete personal information and to opt out of the “sale” or “sharing” of personal information for advertising. Because we do not collect personal information directly, most requests can be met by clearing your browser data and using the advertising opt-out links above. You are also welcome to contact us.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top shows when it was last changed.
