About The Quiet Light

A gentle, unhurried place to rest your heart.

The Quiet Light is a free website for anyone living with grief and loss. It was created especially with older adults in mind — people who may have lost a husband, wife, partner, sibling or lifelong friend, and who want a calm, uncluttered place to find a few comforting words.

What you will find here

  • A gentle page for each day — a short, comforting thought you can read, keep or share.
  • A private reflection space — write a few words about how you feel, and receive a matching line of comfort. Nothing you write ever leaves your device.
  • A breathing lantern — a slow, soothing guide for moments when your chest feels heavy.
  • A library of more than 300 quotes — from the Bible, the Bhagavad Gita and Upanishads, Stoic and Buddhist teaching, poets and writers, and modern grief psychology, arranged by feeling and by tradition.
  • Gentle guides — practical, plain-English articles on loneliness, sleep, guilt, anniversaries and supporting others.

How we choose and credit quotations

Many quotes about grief that circulate online are misattributed. We try hard to be honest about sources:

  • Bible verses marked (KJV) are quoted from the public-domain King James Version.
  • Lines marked “After …” are faithful paraphrases in modern English — for example, of verses from the Bhagavad Gita or summaries of psychological research — rather than word-for-word quotations.
  • Lines marked “Attributed to …” are traditionally credited to a person, but their original source is uncertain.
  • Lines credited to The Quiet Light are original reflections written for this site.

If you spot an error in a quotation or attribution, we would be grateful if you would let us know.

Our design principles

Everything on The Quiet Light is designed to be calm and easy to use: large, clear text; a warm evening mode; big buttons; a few quotes at a time rather than endless scrolling; and no accounts or sign-ups. We keep advertising clearly labelled and away from the reflection and breathing spaces.

How the site is funded

The Quiet Light is free to use. To cover the costs of running it, some pages show advertisements provided by Google AdSense. Ads are always labelled “Advertisement”. You can read more about this in our privacy policy.

An important note

The Quiet Light offers comfort and general information. It is not a substitute for medical, psychological or professional advice. If grief feels too heavy to carry, please speak to your doctor, a grief counsellor or a trusted person. If you are in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, contact your local emergency number or a crisis line straight away — in the US, call or text 988; in the UK and Ireland, call Samaritans on 116 123.
